Happy Monday

At the beginning of the school year I started working three days a week. It has been a huge adjustment for me. Huge, I tell you! Since I work in the middle of the week I have started to love Mondays because they feel like an extra day off. I'm counting this as a much needed plus side. Today was a particularly productive Monday. Here's a quick list of the things Z and I were able to accomplish today:

Vacuumed the whole house, did laundry, played Hopscotch, planted tulip bulbs, eradicated the Giant Knotweed from our yard, watched Curious George, arranged pumpkins on our deck. (Z-cakes prefers them to be in a line across the bottom step but I eventually talked her into small groups.)

Rearranging

And while I'm in the spirit of loving Monday and all, here is a list of things making me terribly happy today:

01. Long email exchanges with Kim about party plans!
02. A new letterpress print hanging in my entry. After living here for a year and a half I can honestly have this hanging in our house.
03. The fact that N8tr0n has not told me what he's getting me for my birthday. I don't think this has happened in the 7 years we've been married so it is worth getting excited about.
04. Z-cakes in striped tights.
05. Clicking through pictures of my brother's wedding.
06. Reading Dracula with Charlotte as part of my new scary book in October tradition. Last year we read Helter Skelter. Creepy.
07. Wearing what is possibly the greatest cardigan I have ever owned in my life.
08. Lunch with N8tr0n.
09. Watching Mad Men with N8tr0n.
10. Pumpkin everything.

Your turn. What is making you terribly happy? No really, I want to hear. And speak up so they can hear you in the back.

First Snow

Last Sunday we went driving to find fall colors. Yesterday we went driving to find snow. We found quite a bit of it at Pebble Creek. Ahh, Idaho. I love you. You're crazy.

ZPebble

In case it isn't obvious, N8tr0n has been bitten with the ski bug. Hard. Also, I recognize that I really need to drag out my real camera and quit subjecting you people to cell phone shots.

Thank you for your votes of confidence regarding Cinderella's dress. We have a completed bodice, people. It was all I could do last night to not wake Z-cakes up to try it on her.

Update: N8tr0n just reminded me of this post. Ahh, Denver. I loved you. You were crazy too.

Oakley to Jackpot

Over Labor Day weekend our family (us, my parents, + N8tr0n's parents) rode four-wheelers from Oakley, ID to Jackpot, NV. Some of us may or may not have been burned to a crisp by the high desert sun, but we all had a wonderful time. It definitely satiated my need to be outside, in the mountains, and very very dirty. Also, have I mentioned lately how much I love Idaho?

Z-cakes was an absolute rock star through the whole trip. Two days on the four-wheeler and she didn't complain. Not once. Unless of course we stopped for a break and then she complained a bit because it was time to ride.

The Time, It Flies

Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit!

I had to pop in here this afternoon to wish all of you a happy June. Did you know that we have lived in Idaho for an entire year? How can that be? On May 26th last year we pulled away from our beloved duplex in Denver and headed to Idaho. On June 1st, N8tr0n started his new job. A few months later we bought our first house, and a few months after that N8tr0n started a new new job. And now? Right now all is right with the world.

There are definitely times when I still miss Denver and the many friends that we had there. But the gravitational pull that Denver had on my heart when we were driving away has loosened and Idaho is feeling more like home everyday. That's not to say that I couldn't still go for some Chipotle. Or Sweet Action. Or Good Times. Or Tokyo Joes. Anyway.

I am done with work for the day. My first order of business is to go outside. If I have learned anything from this spring it has to fill my nice weather canteen whenever I can because the clouds are probably rolling in in about an hour. Maybe this is what it feels like to live in the moment?

A chicken update is on the way. Thanks for the request. I'm also throwing a shower with my friend Jen this Saturday so be prepared for a picture heavy party post. Aaaaaand I'll be sure to share the mix I'm putting together for the drive to Jen's house! Yay!

Happy June Friends. Go enjoy the sunshine if you can.

This time last year

DSC_3939

This time last year,
I was mourning the loss of my dear friend and mentor, Charlotte, and making dinner for her family. Today I will be celebrating her life by baking the bread that she taught me how to make and taking it to someone in need. (Inspired by her equally wonderful daughter, Denise).

This time last year N8tr0n's parents were visiting. Today I will be putting the finishing touches on the guest bedroom in preparation for their arrival here tomorrow!

This time last year I was snacking on company cake. Today I will be making that same cake for some new friends that are coming over for dinner.

This time last year we had no idea when N8tr0n would get a job. I was working as much as I could to keep our savings from completely dwindling. Today I sent N8tr0n off to work and said a prayer of thanks for his good job and steady income.

This time last year we were trying to have a baby. Today nothing much has changed, except that I have a better doctor. And that I'm beginning to feel a bit apathetic about the whole ordeal.

This time last year we were getting ready for a trip to Idaho. Today we live here, and we're loving it more everyday.

Today the weather is supposed to be in the MID SIXTIES. Also, NO WIND—and if you live in Idaho, you know that last part is a really big deal. If you need us, we'll be at the park. All day.

RABBIT, RABBIT, RABBIT, EVERYBODY!

P.S. I'm back! I've missed you!

Adventures of a young couple in Idaho

On Saturday night they decided to check out the new sushi restaurant in town.

It bothered her calling it the "new" sushi restaurant. It implied that there was another sushi restaurant in town, and there wasn't.

Their previous doubts about Southern Idaho sushi (how long did the fish take to get there? does their fish see a lot of turn around?) were quickly quelled as she sat eating possibly the best roll (the Sawtooth Roll) she had had since that one Spider Roll she had in California.

photo(3)

He enjoyed having a plate of nigiri all to himself since she doesn't do "real" sushi anymore. Not now that she's won his heart. And discovered unagi.

photo(2)

As they sat celebrating his new new job and pondered their rock and roll lifestyle she said, "maybe we can be happy here."

photo

After dinner they went to Fred Meyer to buy hooks. The kind with the sticky stuff on the back.

The End.

Happy Weekend

Just a few highlights of our trip to Idaho...

DSC_0090

watching Z-cakes climb right in the corral with Dad's cattle. Her lack of fear confuses me.

meeting Miss Hilary AND Miss Marta for brunch! I had a wonderful time and yes, they really are as cute and genuine as you imagine.

dancing through my first ever Zumba class at Main Motion Dance in Oakley! I'll definitely be finding a class when we get back to Denver.

lunching with a bundle of college roommates and high school friends + kids. I can't wait for our roommate reunion in August!

shopping with my mom and Z-cakes.

eating all of the cookies, chocolate covered cinnamon bears, and Reeses Eggs my mom keeps her house stocked with.

basking in the beautiful sun after a day of crazy wind. Idaho likes to remind you that warm Spring days sans wind should be cherished.

hearing Z-cakes exclaim "Hi Everybody!" when she runs into the house after playing outside ALL DAY with Grandpa K. Methinks we have a little farmer on our hands. She wants to "go see cows" at pretty much any time of day.

Happy Weekend everybody. I hope you have a wonderful one. And please don't forget to enter the Simply Yours Designs Giveaway! You have until Sunday to enter so cross your fingers and tell your friends.

Ida-Home

On my cell phone, I have my parents' phone number programmed as "Idaho." That way when they call me I can tell myself that the Gem State is calling me on the phone.

***

Most of you know that I grew up in Idaho, but I'm not sure how many of you know that I grew up in the country surrounded by livestock and crops. My father operates a cattle feedlot that he inherited from his father around 30 years ago. (Is that right dad? 3o years? Am I completely making that up?) The feedlot is behind our house along with a few fields that dad owns/rents out to other farmers.

Now, I don't want you automatically thinking that I am a cowgirl. No, I don't mean to give you that impression. I don't own any cowboy boots (though I wouldn't mind a pair), I don't ride horses (I'm actually kind of scared of them), and I've never held down a calf a la PW's kids. To tell you the truth, despite growing up in close proximity to them, I'm pretty scared of cows. I mean they're gigantic. And not smart. And they get scared and they run...and they could run over me and not even notice. So the idea of working cattle when I was young tended to cause me a lot of anxiety. Although, so did most things that appeared even remotely dangerous. I was a very cautious kid.

Okay but now you all think I was just a sissy kid who never went outside and might as well have grown up in the city. So, here is a list of things that I did do while growing up to justify my "farm kid" cred.

:: I "changed water" in the field during the summer. That includes hand lines (which I never NEVER got the hang of), wheel lines, and siphon tubes.

:: I showed steers in 4-H (I liked my steers because I knew they were tame...I was usually terrified of everyone else's calves).

:: I've driven the 10 wheel truck during corn and beet harvests.

:: I've driven the tractor to rake hay.

:: I can use a cutting-torch.

:: I could probably weld something together if my life depended on it.

Whew. Okay I feel better now. I think I can get on with the point of this post now.

Over Thanksgiving weekend, my dad was selling a load of fat cattle. Before the cattle truck comes to pick up a load, dad has to sort through some of the pens of cattle to separate the cattle that are fat enough for slaughter from the ones that still need more time to grow. Since N8tr0n and his parents were going out with dad to see the action I decided to join them with my camera.

A brief tutorial on sorting cattle: The pens are laid out so that there is an open alley that runs down the middle of the lot. The gate to one of the pens is opened and the cattle are pushed out of the pen and into the alley. Then they're pushed down to the end of the alley and next to another empty pen. One person (usually dad) stands in front of the cattle keeping them at the end of the alley. Another person (usually a hired man or offspring braver than I) opens the gate to the empty pen and stands next to it. Dad does his best to make one cow separate from the herd and run down the alley toward the gate man. Dad then yells "in" or "by" and the gate man either directs the cow into the empty pen or lets it run by. So basically fat cattle are going into a pen together and the rest are waiting to get put back in their original pen. Make sense?

{Cows waiting}

I never got a really good picture from dad's end but the above picture is of some of the fat cattle waiting in their pen.

{cows...hesitant}

It was a cold morning and the cattle were doing a lot of running/sweating. It filled the air with steam which looked really cool. These cattle have all lined up because they can see me and are too scared to come any closer. I am, of course, protected by a sturdy fence.

{N8tr0n, Dad + broom}

Here dad is talking to N8tr0n while my brother and the hired man bring more cattle down. Notice the broom? He'll tell you that a broom is the best cattle sorting tool around. Also, doesn't the sky look amazing in this photo? No photoshopping necessary folks.

{Izzy waiting}

N8tr0n tries to bring Izzy along to work cattle whenever he gets a chance. Sometimes dad worries that there will be too many dogs around getting the cattle too excited so N8tr0n tries to keep tabs on Izzy at all times so she doesn't lose cattle working privileges. Above is a picture of her waiting patiently for her turn to have fun.

izzy
{Izzy hard at work}

The dogs' main job while sorting cattle is to make the steer run down the alley. Sometimes once they get past dad they're too scared to keep running toward the gate and the gate man. The dogs nip at the cow's heels to keep them running in the right direction.

{Izzy putting in}

Izzy is very much a city dog (she's lying at my feet on her dog bed right now), so it is amazing to watch her when she is around the cattle. N8tr0n has trained her to stay next to him and wait for his signal to get the cows but other than that, you're looking at pure instincts my friends.

I hope you enjoyed this glimpse of life on my dad's Idaho feedlot. I have just one more picture to share with you...

I'm saving this one for when dad is nominated for cattle grower of the year. I think it will look great on a plaque, don't you?

Idaho

N8tr0n and I went on a hike while we were in Idaho. His back has been out a good portion of the summer so we missed out on a lot of hiking. This hike was just what we needed.

The hike was beautiful...dustier than most, but beautiful nonetheless. We hiked to the creek below which was totally worth the work.

On The Road Again...

*This is the same post as my family blog*

The Walkers are going to IDAHO!!!

After much back and forth...buying and cancelling plane tickets...humming and hawing...we have decided to drive to Idaho TONIGHT!

We're taking some inspiration from other parents I know who drive through the night when they have littles who don't have much to do other than chill in their carseat. Wish us luck!

I must say that I'm pretty dang excited to see my family. Also, my dear friends: Jen, Erica, Makenna, Jaime, Emmylou, & Rachel. I can't belive the serendipity that has struck in the fact that all of those girls will be within driving distance of me this week! Anyone else living in Burley or Idaho Falls that would like to hang out with us, we would love to see you too. Email me at walker dot miranda at gmail dot com

P.S. Don't worry Serin...I'm taking my laptop and camera so that I can blog about camp still. I know that's what you're worried about *sheesh*
